Holiday Activities on Lanzarote

Whilst many people book holidays in Lanzarote fully intent on lying by the pool, the island has a wealth of things to do. So those who can tear themselves away from the sunbeds will find there is plenty to fill the day.

All at Sea

As one would expect on an island, there are lots of sea based sports activities to try. Including wind-surfing, kite-surfing, sailing and diving. The underwater world just off the coast is particularly rich in aquatic life and is the reason Lanzarote has become a favourite spot for scuba-diving. For those who don’t fancy donning a wetsuit, they can still explore life beneath the waves on a submarine from Puerto Calero, one of the most popular excursions in Lanzarote. Surfing is best attempted either on the wild north coast at Famara or in Costa Teguise. And numerous yachts and catamarans are moored in Puerto Calero to take visitors out on the waves.

Animal Magic

With three parks all offering a slightly different animal experience, there is plenty to keep children amused. Donkeys, camels and horses rule the roost at Lanzarote a Caballo, where kids can get their ‘licence’ to ride. Rancho Texas combines several animal shows with a wild-west theme park, whilst Guinate Tropical Park is home to a wide range of birdlife and tropical gardens.

Attractions

The island has a further seven attractions to entice visitors, all of which were designed by Lanzarote artist César Manrique. His vision was to show off his native island without spoiling the beautiful landscapes. His best work can be seen at the most popular tourist attractions of Timanfaya National Park and the Jameos del Agua. The first of these is in the heart of the volcanic region and allows visitors to get up close and personal to the many cones and lava fields.

The Jameos del Agua is an underground adventure, created from a lava tunnel and comprises a former nightclub, restaurant, hanging gardens, music auditorium and swimming pool.

Active Days Out

With two golf courses, Lanzarote is now able to offer the golf enthusiast a bit more choice. The new course at Puerto del Carmen has joined the older Costa Teguise golf club in recent months. Bike hire is a popular option for getting around the resorts, as each is on relatively flat ground, compared with the island inland. But this hilly landscape makes it ideal for hill-walking and offers amazing vistas to those who are prepared to climb some of the many volcanoes and peaks to be found, especially on the Risco de Famara.
