Shore Thing :: Marina Property in Lanzarote
Where can you find the most upmarket selection of property in Lanzarote? Whilst the eastern most Canary Island is home to a number of upmarket residential enclaves there are few real contenders for this title beyond the luxury marina at Puerto Calero. Where restrained development, limited supply and an idyllic location have together created an unrivalled residential environment.
Puerto Calero was created by a local developer called José ‘Pepe’ Calero back in 1986. And today is firmly established as one of the best appointed marinas on this side of Atlantic. With berths for 420 luxury yachts and cruisers, the best selection of high end shops on the island (including anchor tenants such as Hugo Boss) and a fine selection of bars and restaurants, such as the popular eatery La Amura.
The supply of property within the marina has also been carefully controlled – a key factor in maintaining values. With luxury villas overlooking the main harbor area at the core of the blueprint. With a smattering of luxury apartments scattered around the marina area itself. Build quality here is also of the highest order – a factor that cannot always be said to be the case for other developments around the island.
Thanks to Puerto Calero´s ideal location – just five minutes from the nearby mega resort of Puerto del Carmen and just a short fifteen minute transfer from the airport the marina is also starting to become a popular choice with holidaymakers and is starting to emerge as a resort in its own right.
Indeed, two of the best new hotels in Lanzarote have opened their doors for business here in recent years – The Hesperia Puerto Calero and the Costa Calero hotel. Whilst holiday villas in and around the marina are also in high demand – despite the fact that rental rates start from around €1,000 week for a typical villa property with pool.
Whilst there’s no beach at the marina Puerto Calero still boasts a great range of facilities for the amusement of holiday makers and is also home to some of the best excursion operators on the island. Such as Catlnza´s luxury catamaran – which cruises along the coastline to the beautiful beaches at Paapagayo. And Submarine Safaris yellow submarine – which takes tourists on an undersea voyage of discovery.
Puerto Calero´s popularity has come under challenge in recent years though. As a new rival, the Marina Rubicon, has opened to the south in Playa Blanca. Whilst big plans are afoot to transform the harbour area in Puerto del Carmen into a luxury marina – a project which reaches completion in May 2009.
What impact this will have on property prices on the island remains to be seen. As although Lanzarote is experiencing a downturn like most other developed countries the islands economy remains buoyant. Thanks to Lanzarote´s on-going popularity as a tourist destination.
