3 lb beef, Ground

For single : Cut one potato into small pieces. Cut carrot
into sticks. Make a patty of 1/4 lb. ground beef (3/4 inches thick).
Place all ingredients side by side on a piece of foil. Season to

Frying Pan Cookies
2 Eggs, unbeaten

Cook over a low heat for 10 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove
from stove and add 2 cups of Rice Krispies.
Roll in balls and dip in coconut.
*Would recommend from none to 1/2 c sugar. Dates, coconut and Rice

Preparing Your Food For – easy camping meals

You can get tired of sandwiches after awhile so having some great tasting easy camping meals is a must when going camping. Camping out. Try the recipes at home first to see if your family likes them.

Carry paper plates & cups (not plastic) that can be burned in campfire

Use block ice, instead of cubes to keep things cool, it lasts a lot longer. Block ice can be hard to find in some areas so make your own – make one or several large cubes at home (using old milk or plastic containers filled with water)

Make sure you have enough fuel for the camp stove for the entire trip

Plan your meals ahead don’t wait until after you get there

Prepare vegetables at home (the night before the trip) and put them in zip lock bags, prepackaged bags ‘o salad from the grocery is a great way to get your fresh leafy veggies

If you intend to use cheese, grate your cheese ahead of time or buy pre-grated packages (put in cooler)

Use Pringles canned potato chips – so they won’t get crumbled

Put your bread in a box – so it won’t get crushed

Carry only pancake batter that mixes with water. (no eggs or milk needed)

Place only beverages in the cooler that will be consumed on the first day refill every night

Camping can be the greatest family experience of your life or the worst. Planning is a big key to camping bliss.

Over a decade ago there has been a consistent rise in new hiking tent designs. The huge range of choices makes it confusing initially but it can better be understood by categorizing them in two ways.

Hiking tents are sorted by function followed by structure. An example of this is hiking tents being sorted by season where tents are either 4-season or 3-season tents. This can then be further sorted by the number of bodies it can hold.

The expression “3-man” soon turned to “3-person” and “4-man” to “4-person” and even to solo, duo, trio, quartet and so on. But this means that there is need for a more cynical way of looking at the description.

This is because what some manufacturers mean by a 3-man hiking tent is a tent that can accommodate 3 small human bodies laid out like corpses. If it were live breathing people the space would be too small.

If you were hiking solo, some people prefer to carry a 2-man tent so that you can also store your camping gear and yet provide enough comfort and space for you to cook if you really have to. It’s so much more comfortable to be stuck in a 2-person tent for days in a blizzard than to be stuck in a small bivvy tent.

Some hiking tent makers make space for camping gear and cooking. Cooking in your tent without ventilation is not a recommended practice. It can even spell death for you. Be sure the hiking tent is well ventilated when you cook in it. hiking tents that allow for such matters are tagged as “2-plus”, “3-plus” and so on.

Going back to take the example of “4-season” hiking tent models we see that they are designs that could do well in the worst snow and rain and strong winds. Closing the gap between 4-season and 3-season tents are “convertible” tents. This type of tent can save weight by removing some parts of the tent including poles, sections and zip-out roof panel.

However, most new hiking tents are 3-season tents that do well in all seasons except for the worst of winter. The lightweight version is sufficient for backpacking in late spring and early fall also known as the 2-season hiking tent.

Note that this type of categorization is based on estimations of the average person. The problem is not everyone has the same tolerance for comfort. An experienced hiker might survive a blizzard with the lightest of 3-season tents or even a small bivvy and yet still enjoy the comfortable rest.

If you have very little extra room and need to heat up a can of corned beef from time to time then a single burner propane stove may work just right for you.

Different Fuel Types

There are pros and cons on the different different types of fuel used on outdoor camping stove. The most used fuel is liquid fuel white gas and the other pressurized gas in canisters with several different styles of canisters available. I personally recommend only two fuel types- Coleman style screw on propane canisters or white gas -Coleman liquid fuel-.

The most popular fuel source is white gas, which performs very well. White gas is readily available all over but may not be outside the U.S.

White Gas Stoves

May favorite is the white gas outdoor camping stove The white gas stoves will produce the most heat of any camping cook stove . The white gas stoves now come in “dual fuel” versions. This allows you to use unleaded gasoline in addition to the white gas. A lot of people use the pump gas and are happy with it. I find it is smelly and if you spill it or get it on your hands, it’s hard to get rid of the odor. Stick with the white gas if you can.

I try to use only the white gas in the dual fuel stoves. If you run out and can’t find any white gas – then use the unleaded gasoline. The main advantage of using unleaded gasoline over white gas is the cost. This is the only real advantage to the dual fuel outdoor camping stove. being able to find fuel whenever you need it can be a real plus. I feel the extra cost for the few gallons of white gas used each year is worth paying so you get the cleaner burning fuel. The dual fuel stoves do cost more.

Liquid white gas burns hotter than the “propane – butane” gas and works better in windy, cold and low atmospheric conditions therefore it is the primary fuel for most expedition stoves. Most often it is lighter and cheaper to use liquid fuel than gas fuel due to the gas canister being heavier and has to be purchased each time. Liquid fuel does not burn as cleanly as gas and is more difficult to regulate the temperature. As for as transporting it’s somewhat safer to carry a gas canister in the trunk of your car than a bottle of white gas.

Pressurized Gas – Propane, Butane

The next most popular fuel are propane gas canisters. If simplicity of use is your main concern use a pressurized gas outdoor camping stove. The fuels are made from blends of butane and other gases. Gas canisters are not refillable and must be thrown away when empty which ads to the landfills. You cannot check to see how much fuel is left in the canister when using pressurized gas. When using white gas, it is easy to check remaining fuel and to top of if needed.

Pressurized gas outdoor camping stove can be lit as soon as the fuel canister is in place and a little air is bled out. No pumping, priming or preheating the burner.

One last note: Make sure you know how to use your outdoor camping stove before going camping, use it at home instead of waiting until your in the field.

Don’t you hate it when you have a hunting trip planned and the forecast calls for lousy weather? Have you ever canceled a camping trip because it was too cold or rainy? I don’t have that problem anymore. Last November I decided to go to deer camp with my brother and some friends. We made our plans a couple weeks in advance so we’d have plenty of time to get our camping equipment ready. As opening day of deer season approached, I kept an eye on the Weather Channel and the prospects didn’t look good. The forecast was for a snowy, freezing weekend but we knew it wouldn’t stop us from bagging our deer.

The fact is I had postponed too many camping trips in the past and recently bought a four season camping tent and some thermal sleeping bags to stop it from happening again. The tent sleeps eight people so I knew there would be plenty of room for the four of us and our equipment. I also knew we’d be protected because the four season camping tent is made to fight off all kinds of bad weather.

As the weekend approached, I packed all my supplies with complete confidence that we’d be going hunting as planned. Not only that but people without the proper camping gear would be staying home. Less hunters in the forest would mean more deer for us. Also, you know how it seems like the deer know just when the season starts? Well, maybe because of the rotten weather they wouldn’t hide quite so carefully.

The weekend finally arrived and we packed our camping equipment in the car and headed for the woods. All of a sudden it dawned on me that we forgot the picnic backpacks with the sandwiches for our first day in it. We don’t barbecue on Friday because by the time we get to camp and set up our tent, it’s too late to bother cooking.  After the first night though, we take out our barbecue tools and grill up dinner on our portable grill.

Finally we hit the highway. I couldn’t wait to get to hunting camp and set up our camping gear before the snow and wind started. For me there’s nothing better than a weekend in the woods with my best friends and the anticipation of the hunt to come. Stay tuned and I’ll tell you how we did on our bad weather hunting trip.
