One of the nicest things guests like about the Sneaker Ball is that it is for a good cause. All of the proceeds go to Grass Roots, which is a program designed to help inner-city kids. These kids are brought to Aspen, Colorado to experience what life outside the city is. Many of these kids don’t even realize that places like Aspen, Colorado really exist. Tickets cost $125 per person, which isn’t too bad considering that the money is for a good cause.

People from diverse backgrounds attend the Sneaker Ball each year. Some friends and I were at a store yesterday where they had some western saddles for sale. I really wanted to buy some of these saddles because they were really cheap and the prices were very reasonable. I did not have much money so I could only afford two of the saddles, but one of my friends said that I could borrow some money from him. Back in the 1960´s the Lanzarote born artist and architect Cesar Manrique created an incredible underground house out of five volcanic bubbles.  And his incredible creation – undoubtedly the most unusual Lanzarote property - is still blowing visitors away to this day. Attracting hundreds of thousands of tourists every year.

Cesar Manrique is the man who tirelessly campaigned against over development on the island of Lanzarote as package tourism started to take off.  Ensuring that the Island of Fire avoided a similar fate to other Spanish sunspots that were then being submerged beneath a sea of high rise hotels and apartment complexes.

 In order to ensure that development on Lanzarote remained relatively restrained Manrique sought to create a physical demonstration of what could be achieved by uniting art with nature.  So illuminating an eco-friendly path for the evolution of tourism on Lanzarote.  And hit upon the idea of building a home and studio out of five volcanic chambers, located in the hear of the island in the village of Tahiche.

 The artist first came across the site for his first major architectural work on Lanzarote when out walking across some lava fields with friends.  Where he noticed the green tips of a fig tree poking up from beneath the solidified flow. On closer inspection the tree occupied one of a number of underground chambers – which Manrique went on to unite and by 1968 his vision was complete.

 Manrique´s house basically sits on two levels.  The upper floor looks pretty much like a large traditional white washed island home from the exterior but inside massive windows give incredible vistas to the lava fields whilst also incorporating bits of the flow in places, so serving to unite indoor and outdoor space effectively.

 Underground, each volcanic bubble – measuring around 5 m (16 ft) in diameter – has been transformed into an elegantly designed room, with its own distinctive character, furniture and colour.

 In one visitors find a Zen-like, gently trickling fountain; in another, a palm links the lower with the upper level. The outdoor barbecue and dining area features a traditional grill alongside an open-air pool, which is filled by a waterspout reminiscent of the work of Mexican artist Louis Barragan.

 As with all of Manrique´s later creations the planting is impeccable and inventive, creating form and providing splashes of colour that contrast perfectly with the white walls and black lava.  Today, Manrique´s house appears to be “very 70´s” to the eyes of many visitors. But at the time it was considered very progressive by the cognoscenti, if not outlandishly futuristic. As a result a non-stop stream of glamorous visitors, such as royalty and film stars, beat a path to his front door, all clamoring to see this wonderful new creation. 

 Unsurprisingly, the house remains just as popular today, welcoming on average some 300,000 visitors a year and now houses the best art gallery on the island as well as the HQ of the Cesar Manrique Foundation, a non-profit body established to promoting his work and artistic philosophy.
